I love this sweater and thought it made for a good dual purpose “halloween decor” + “just in case” sweater.

Micro-Update

Working with Entourage, been a little frustrating. Currently falling asleep and generating this blog post to show a friend how the WordPress “TwitterPosts” plugin works for me.

RSS woes

Updated the theme for my blog and no matter what (even redirecting traffic to FeedBurner (http://feeds2.feedburner.com/cfgonzales/PSVl) my wordpress doesn’t refresh the xml for my feed. Guess I’ll pick up on this again tomorrow or whatever. It’s too late and We have a lot of stuff to do before our Ohio trip Wednesday. :/

too long…

It has been too long since my last post or even my last behind the scene update to my configuration to at least make the beta section a little more presentable. The core goal of cfgonzales dot com will still be to execise my web practices to include design and programming experimentation and implementation. So far out of the beta blog and live sites I have only been able to consistently use the email I have set up through dreamhost for my domain. It has been a practical solution to being able to access my email no matter where I am at and not have to rely on a third party solution. I ultimately hope to implement a blog that is also free of any third party servers in an attempt to force myself to use a “real world” situation and deal with the fruits and headaches of hosting my own services. I have learned that Google has a few tools that are “hostable” instead of using their servers and I might try a couple of those out for ease of use before moving on to anything more complicated.

Drupal has turned out to be a little too much for the casual blogger but I wanted to use it as a learning project to further learn how a full fledged CMS with all the bells and whistles can be set up and customized. It has been indirectly suggested that I should scale it back to a smaller CMS system in order to gain a better grasp at customizing the look and feel of a site before moving into the myriad of different modules most of the bigger CMS systems use. I’m very tempted to scratch the entire beta site in lieu of a Wordpress installation….very tempted.

On a tangent I hope to have my personal and beta blogs shared amongst like minded individuals in an attempt to give some insight and possibly get some feedback on any of these ideas. At the same time I am keeping up with at least one friend’s blog hoping that it will spark some sort of creative peer insight.

Drupalized

I have installed Drupal on my beta site and learning as I go. The taxonomy system in place will do everything I wanted as far as being able to create a navigational system via category and to also organize via category. I am so excited I nearly wet myself. Wheee! Drupal also has the ability to manage several sites using a single installation which is most excellent with my current set up having split the different functions of cfgonzales into three different sub-domains.

Current plans to get Drupalized:

  1. get core navigational and site structure in place
  2. visually revamp the layout to something more my style
  3. work on internalizing any and all functions (not content) that are dependant on 3rd parties

A Different Perspective

To keep the site up and running I have decided to split it up via sub-domains for now. This will allow for me to have my “in-progress” separate from my “blog” separate from my “live” content.

I was running into minor issues and was curious as to how you blog.

I’m using my Blogger account but hosting the blog at http://blog.cfgonzales.com/. So far so good, please feel free to check it out.

I am working on a way to effectively create/edit/plan posts before publishing so as to not be tethered to a computer in order to do so. I figured the easiest and most cost efficient way was to do this via my pda but in doing so have found a flaw in the software/setup.

I am using a freeware application (u*Blog) that seems to be as simple and effective as I would need it to be. It communicates with your “blog” via XML-RPC . The issue is that it doesn’t seem to pull all of the information I need from Blogger’s API in order to use u*Blog to it’s full potential. There is little to no support available out there for this software so I was hoping to get a little more insight on how you blog.

Do you use anything other than your computer to blog? Do you make use of Blogger’s XML-RPC function and if so what have been your experiences with it?

I know that u*Blog also supports Movable type which I am willing to try but would rather get input on Blogger first.

Minor reconfiguration

  1. I set up blog.cfgonzales.com for my personal “day to day” blog.
  2. reinstalled and reconfigured the u*blog application on my palm which enables me to perform planned blog entries on the go.

fleeting thoughts: with my current format of entering blog posts I can see a trend of my content being a mash up of dev and personal insight. I am okay with this for the moment but would possibly like to find a way to “tag” my posts for easy categorization.

Blogging plans

Okay so apparently publishing to a blog using blogger is very easy even when hosting it on your own server.

Plans will be to:

  1. I want to incorporate this blog feed into a main page as part of several feeds I will use to share with the greater world as we know it. The feeds will include but not be limited to other sites that I post to and this “main” page will serve as an umbrella for it all.
  2. I’m planning on taking advantage of u*Blog on my PDA in order to blog while offline without having to use my LG the V aka vx9800 SMS or mms plan. Well see how that works because if I keep my current data plan with unlimited web access I do not currently see a need to have to use the separate data plan for messaging in order to effectively blog. The trick will be transferring my pix and flix sans MMS.
  3. establish how much I want to customize the final design and feel for my main site. I’ve been told that a major flaw of mine is the want to reinvent the wheel every time I take on a new project

That should be pretty much it for now. I’ll get my u*Blog palm application set up being as they have specific features available to blogger users. Sleep is not an option right now because as of this post it is now 5:15am and I have last week’s E3 coverage playing on the telly in the background. Heh (^-^)
